Stricter Biocide Regulations Needed to Protect Dutch Water Quality, Say Water Authorities
Dutch water authorities call for stronger biocide regulation to protect water quality and meet EU Water Framework Directive goals.

In a landmark regulatory decision, the European Union has granted Union authorisation to the biocidal product 'EuLA oxi-lime 23' (authorisation number EU-0028963-0000), a significant step forward in environmental and public health safety.
The Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/2703, effective from December 25, 2023, to November 30, 2033, underscores the EU's commitment to stringent environmental standards. 'EuLA oxi-lime 23,' produced by the European Lime Association aisbl, has been rigorously evaluated and deemed compliant with Regulation (EU) No 528/2012.
This biocidal product, containing calcium oxide as its active substance, falls under product-types 2 and 3. It is designed for disinfectants not intended for direct human or animal application and for veterinary hygiene, respectively. The approval follows an extensive assessment process, including a review by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) and a public opinion release.
'EuLA oxi-lime 23' is approved for use in disinfecting sewage sludge, manure, and surfaces in animal accommodations and transportation. While it is a robust disinfectant, users must adhere to strict safety protocols, including the use of protective equipment and adherence to specific application rates, to mitigate potential risks.
This authorisation represents a significant development for professionals in the sanitation and agricultural sectors, offering an effective, EU-approved biocidal solution. However, it necessitates a keen awareness of the product's handling requirements and safety measures to ensure compliance and public safety.
The EU's authorisation of 'EuLA oxi-lime 23' marks a crucial step in advancing biocidal products that align with rigorous health and environmental standards. This decision serves as a model for future regulatory actions, balancing efficacy with safety and environmental considerations.
Stakeholders should remain informed about the usage guidelines and safety measures associated with this product to align with EU regulations and ensure public and environmental health.
