🚫 Rhode Island Bans PFAS in Consumer Products

Rhode Island has passed the Consumer PFAS Ban Act, prohibiting PFAS in various consumer products by 1 January 2027. The ban covers items like cookware, cosmetics, and textiles. Exceptions apply for unavoidable trace amounts and used products. The Act also bans PFAS in firefighting foam from 2025, aiming to reduce environmental and health risks.

🧴 EPA Grants Petition to Regulate PFAS Formed During Plastic Fluorination

The European Commission has outlined forthcoming changes to food contact materials (FCMs) regulation. Key changes include increased responsibility on manufacturers, enhanced transparency, and a ban on bisphenol A (BPA) in FCMs. The regulation, expected to be adopted by November 2024, includes transitional periods and aims to improve safety and sustainability in FCM production.

🦷 EU Implements Stricter Regulations on Mercury Usage

Starting 1 January 2025, the EU will largely prohibit dental amalgam to reduce mercury emissions. The new regulation extends deadlines for certain member states and bans the import and manufacturing of dental amalgam from 1 July 2026. The regulation also targets mercury-added lamps, promoting safer alternatives. This aligns with the Minamata Convention on Mercury, emphasizing health and environmental protection.
