UK Moves Forward with Complete Ban on Bee-Killing Neonicotinoid Pesticides
UK takes a bold step to safeguard pollinators, moving to ban harmful neonicotinoid pesticides and support sustainable farming practices.

As part of its ongoing commitment to ensuring a safe and sustainable environment, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) of Great Britain has proposed the withdrawal of approval for three active substances commonly used in plant protection products. Changes like these are pivotal in the world of agriculture and environmental safety, and stakeholders need to be aware of the implications and required actions.
In Great Britain, a distinct regulatory framework oversees the authorization and use of plant protection products (PPPs). This regime is diligent in reviewing currently approved substances to align with the latest scientific findings and environmental concerns.
The substances facing potential withdrawal include mancozeb, famoxadone, and indoxacarb. Their proposed removal follows thorough reviews on whether these substances continue to meet the criteria for approval under current regulations.
New scientific data suggests that mancozeb exhibits endocrine disrupting properties for both humans and non-target organisms, and poses an unacceptable exposure risk. As a result, the HSE has suggested withdrawing its approval in GB.
The approval review for famoxadone identified new toxicological reference values, casting doubt on its safety regarding birds, mammals, and aquatic life. The HSE was unable to ensure no harmful effects on birds, prompting the proposal to withdraw its approval.
Indoxacarb's non-dietary exposure levels have raised concerns, surpassing the Acceptable Operator Exposure Level / Acute Acceptable Operator Exposure Level for various groups. Consequently, the substance's approval is also suggested for withdrawal.
The HSE will submit the details of these proposals to the World Trade Organisation for a consultation period. This process permits trading partners to comment on the proposals, an essential step before any final decisions are made.
Updates and further information regarding the status of mancozeb, famoxadone, and indoxacarb will be available in the statutory approvals register of active substances.
For any questions relating to these changes or the pesticides regulations in general, stakeholders can contact the HSE directly for support and guidance.
