Stricter Biocide Regulations Needed to Protect Dutch Water Quality, Say Water Authorities
Dutch water authorities call for stronger biocide regulation to protect water quality and meet EU Water Framework Directive goals.

On 2 October 2024, the European Commission granted Union authorisation for Diversey Europe Operations B.V.’s Divosan PAA biocidal products. This approval, effective from 23 October 2024, allows the product family to be marketed and used across EU member states in accordance with Regulation (EU) No 528/2012. Divosan PAA products, which utilise peracetic acid as the active substance, are authorised for use in disinfecting various sectors, including veterinary hygiene, food, and feed industries.
The biocidal product family, Divosan PAA, includes disinfectants designed for a broad range of applications under product types PT02, PT03, and PT04. The products target bacteria, yeasts, fungi, and viruses, ensuring cleanliness and safety across different sectors. Diversey Europe Operations B.V. applied for this Union-wide authorisation in December 2023, with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) supporting the product’s efficacy through an extensive evaluation process.
Divosan PAA products are authorised for critical applications, including:
Divosan PAA products contain 4.5% to 15.9% peracetic acid, a highly effective antimicrobial agent, supported by hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid. These biocides are applied via spraying, pouring, or dipping methods, followed by mandatory rinsing with potable water in food industry applications. The product family has been tested to meet stringent EU safety regulations, ensuring minimal environmental impact when used as directed.
The authorisation, which expires on 30 June 2033, aligns with the lifecycle of the related Airedale PAA product family, previously authorised in June 2023. This continuity supports the safe and regulated use of peracetic acid-based products throughout the EU, promoting high hygiene standards in multiple industries.
