Illinois to Ban Nonbiodegradable Plastic Glitter in Personal Care Products by 2029
Illinois will prohibit nonbiodegradable plastic glitter in personal care products by 2029, impacting manufacturers, retailers, and regulators alike.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed the registration of Glycerol Formate as a new pesticide active ingredient for hospital disinfectants and sanitizers. This ingredient is intended for use on non-porous hard surfaces and soft surfaces in healthcare settings. Public comments on this proposal are open until October 14, 2024.
Glycerol Formate is a new active ingredient composed of three ester forms: glycerol monoformate, diformate, and triformate. It is designed to work as a sporicidal disinfectant for non-porous hard surfaces and a sanitizer for soft surfaces in healthcare facilities such as hospitals, medical premises, and nursing homes. This two-part system combines Glycerol Formate with hydrogen peroxide to create Performic Acid (PFA), the active biocide that disinfects surfaces.
The EPA conducted a thorough evaluation to assess the potential risks and benefits of Glycerol Formate. The proposed use is limited to indoor environments with minimal risk of environmental exposure. The EPA's assessment concluded that the risks to human health are low, with no expected dietary exposures. Glycerol Formate reacts quickly with hydrogen peroxide to form PFA, which then rapidly degrades into water and oxygen, reducing environmental impact.
Glycerol Formate is used as part of a two-part system where Part A (containing Glycerol Formate) is mixed with Part B (containing hydrogen peroxide) to generate PFA. The end-use solution is then applied with a wipe to disinfect surfaces. Safety precautions include avoiding direct contact with eyes and skin. The solution must be handled according to label instructions, and the EPA has proposed that it poses no significant risk to healthcare workers when used correctly.
The EPA is seeking public comments on the proposed registration of Glycerol Formate. Interested parties can submit their comments through the Regulations.gov website by October 14, 2024. This feedback will contribute to the EPA's final decision regarding the registration of this new active ingredient.
The proposed registration of Glycerol Formate represents a significant step forward in hospital disinfection, offering a new tool to combat pathogens while minimizing risks to human health and the environment. The EPA's public comment period provides an opportunity for stakeholders to contribute to the final decision.
