The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced an urgent warning to farmworkers and the agricultural sector about the dangers of Dacthal (dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate, or DCPA). This step is part of the EPA's initiative to address the significant health hazards DCPA poses, especially to pregnant individuals and their unborn babies.

The Risks of DCPA

Used extensively in agricultural and non-agricultural settings, DCPA is a key herbicide for crops like broccoli, sprouts, cabbage, and onions. However, the EPA's recent assessment reveals concerning risks. These include potential serious, permanent, and irreversible health impacts, particularly for the developing babies of pregnant workers, who might be exposed to DCPA levels far exceeding safety guidelines.

EPA's Response and Action

"Exposure to DCPA is a serious concern for pregnant workers and their children," says Michal Freedhoff, Assistant Administrator for the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. "We're taking immediate steps to warn those at risk and to develop further protective measures." The EPA's findings indicate exposure to DCPA can alter foetal thyroid hormone levels, leading to developmental issues such as low birth weight, impaired brain development, decreased IQ, and poor motor skills.

Measures and Proposals

Following its assessment, the EPA has evaluated changes proposed by AMVAC, DCPA's manufacturer, including cancelling all turf-related DCPA products. Despite these steps, the EPA finds the proposals insufficient to mitigate the identified risks, leading to the planning of more stringent actions under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).

Looking Forward

This announcement is part of the EPA's broader pesticide registration review process, ensuring that registered pesticides do not pose unreasonable health or environmental risks. The agency's proactive approach in addressing the dangers of DCPA reflects its commitment to safeguarding public health.
