ECHA's 2024-2028 Strategy: Tackling Key Regulatory Challenges in Chemical Safety
This strategy aims to advance chemical safety through science, collaboration, and knowledge, emphasising the protection of human health and the environment.

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), based in Helsinki, has initiated a second call for evidence and information regarding aromatic brominated flame retardants. This initiative is part of a broader investigation into the environmental and health risks associated with these chemicals. The call, which began on 30 April 2024, invites stakeholders from various sectors to contribute data by 28June 2024.
The European Commission has tasked ECHA with preparing a comprehensive report on flame retardants, especially focusing on aromatic brominated types. This investigation aims to update the hazard information available and explore the usage of these substances and potential alternatives. The findings from this report will help the Commission decide on the necessity of drafting a restriction dossier.
In its first call, ECHA collected data on the usage of these flame retardants, including the sectors they are employed in and the concentrations used in various materials. The current call seeks further details on possible alternatives that could replace these hazardous substances in industrial applications.
Stakeholders are encouraged to submit their findings using a specially prepared Excel format to ensure uniformity and consistency in the information provided.
The call is open to a wide range of participants including manufacturers, suppliers, recyclers, distributors, and importers, as well as trade associations, scientific organizations, NGOs, and governmental authorities. Both EU/EEA and non-EU stakeholders are invited to contribute. Submissions can be made confidentially, and ECHA assures that all confidential information will be securely handled.
Contributors can submit their information via an online form available on the ECHA website, which includes sections for personal information, organizational details, non-confidential comments, and attachments. It is important to note that once submissions are made, they cannot be retrieved, so participants should keep their own records.
